Rosslyn Park 40 - 24 1st XV
Priory Lane Roehampton London
Sheffield’s continuing injury issue was to see further changes to the team heading to south London and Rosslyn Park FC. In the backs, Barney Goatley came back in to the team at outside centre, with Jack Delaney moving to fullback. George Castledine moved to inside centre and Harry Chubb came off the bench to the right wing. For the forwards, Will Archer and Rhodri Campbell swapped spots in the starting line up and the bench. Josh Kent dropped to the bench and Josh Redfern came in for his first game of the season in the second row, and Will Henshaw moved from the bench to openside flanker. Darcy Mulrooney came in on the bench to cover tight-head prop, making his debut for the club.
Sheffield made what can only be described as a nightmare start to this match, to add a whole new meaning to the expression “not off the bus”. Rosslyn Park kicked off and Sheffield failed to secure the ball. Rosslyn Park immediately broke through the Sheffield defence to score in the first minute with centre, Freddie Vaughan, dotting down wide out on the right. Centre, Rory Jenkins added the conversion to give home team an early 7 points to nil lead. Rosslyn Park’s second try was not long in the making. Sheffield were mounting an attack just inside their own 10-metre, but a flat pass was intercepted and Freddie Vaughan had a second adjacent to the posts. Rory Jenkins had no difficulty in concerting and the lead was 14 points to nil lead with barely four minutes gone.
The pain was not to go away, as Sheffield found that Rosslyn Park’s defence was absolutely furious and forced Sheffield to make far too many errors. So, with the game still in the first quarter Sheffield knocked on and Park had a scrum. They broke from the scrum and moments later second row, Danny Cutmore had crashed over for the third try. Once again Rory Jenkins kicked the conversion and after fifteen minutes the lead was out to 21 points to nil. Rosslyn Park must have thought they had won the lottery. Minutes later a Sheffield knock-on led to a scrum, the scrum led to a free kick and whoosh, winger Lindberg Ekendhal had added the fourth try, and Jenkins converted again and Rosslyn Park led by 28 points to nil on twenty-four minutes. The fifth try came almost immediately, when Sheffield were forced to knock-on again. The scrum gave Rosslyn Park a great attacking position and openside flanker, Archie Hosking had nailed the fifth try on twenty-six minutes. Rory Jenkins converted and the lead was out to 35 points to nil.
Sheffield started to find their ‘Mojo’ and the errors began to come from Sheffield applying pressure to Rosslyn Park. A series of penalties in Sheffield’s favour. Unfortunately, a promising attack came to a halt when we were forced in to touch. However, Rosslyn Park knocked on at the lineout and Sheffield had a scrum just outside Park’s 22-metre. The pack took the play forward toward Park’s try line before the ball found it’s way to Will Smith, out on the wing for him to get Sheffield on to the score sheet with 5 points after thirty-six minutes. Callum Posa could not add the conversion, but the lead had a small dint in it at 35 points to 5.
The second half was to have a completely different complexion with Sheffield much more in the driving seat. However, Rosslyn Park defence remained as ferocious as before and Sheffield just couldn’t get over the Rosslyn Park try line. However, with fifty-eight minutes on the clock, the damn did break and after a bit of a scuffle, scrum half Elliot Fisher touched down out to the left. The incident saw Rosslyn Park’s Harry Ledger sent to the sin bin. Callum Posa added the conversion and the lead was reduced to 35 points to 12.
However, the next few minutes would see Sheffield a little caught out in defence. Sheffield attempting to run out of defence erred when a pass to the wing was adjudged to have been forward, resulting in a Rosslyn Park scrum just outside Sheffield’s 22-metre. The scrum led to a penalty to Park and they kicked to touch deep in Sheffield territory. A smart lineout to the front of the lineout, and passed back to the replacement hooker, Max Fraine, saw Sheffield with no one in defence in the 5-metre zone, and Fraine was able to squeeze over in the corner, wide out on the right. The kicking duties were given to fly-half Lochie Glackin, whose attempted conversion was well wide of the mark, but with sixty-three minutes gone the lead had been extended again, out to 40 points to 12.
Sheffield regained their composure, quickly regaining possession and once again, just two minutes later, scrum half Elliot Fisher sneaked in for his second try and Sheffield’s third. Callum could not add the conversion, but the lead was reduced to 40 points to 17. Rosslyn Park were to receive a second yellow card on seventy-one minutes, given to second row, Danny Cutmore. The incident gave Sheffield the opportunity to have a lineout close in on the Rosslyn Park try line, but the attack was once again forced in to touch. They over threw at the lineout, but somehow still managed to hang on to the ball and kick out to touch just outside their 22-metre. Sheffield secured the ball and were then awarded a penalty and the chance to kick to touch close in on the Rosslyn Park try line. The ball is secured and the pack start a driving maul , leading to replacement hooker Rhodri Campbell scoring the bonus point try on seventy-four minutes. Callum Posa added the conversion and once again the lead had been reduced, now to 40 points to 24. The final minutes saw Rosslyn Park come back and secure a penalty just outside the Sheffield 22-metre. They kicked to touch, but Sheffield stole their line out ball and were able to clear their line and bring the match to an end..
